How to build a sphere in Minecraft
A sphere is built by stacking circular layers of varying diameter. The middle layer is the widest — equal to the sphere's full diameter — and each layer above and below shrinks toward a single point at the top and bottom. The generator calculates every layer's radius automatically using the sphere's height at that point, so you never have to work out the curve by hand.
Start from the middle, not the bottom
Building bottom-up seems natural, but the middle layer is the one every other layer depends on for alignment. Place it first at the height where you want the sphere's center, then build outward — one layer above, one layer below, alternating so the shape stays symmetrical as it grows.
Filled vs. hollow shell
Filled mode plans a fully solid sphere, which uses far more blocks but is simpler to place since there's no interior to worry about. Hollow shell mode only outlines each layer's ring, which is lighter on materials and leaves the interior open for a room, a light source, or redstone — useful for observation domes and decorative orbs alike.
Supporting yourself while building upward
For spheres over 25–30 blocks, temporary scaffolding or a stack of disposable blocks under your feet makes the upper layers far easier to reach accurately. Remove the supports once the sphere is closed. Working from a fixed platform rather than flying freely also makes it easier to keep count of which layer you're on.
